In September 1979  he joined Chalone Vineyard as Assistant Winemaker. In 1983  he was promoted to Winemaker, and in 1984, General manager / Winemaker. From 1984- 1994  Michael conducted extensive vineyard and winery experiments at Chalone to better understand the very unique characteristics of this special place. In 1989 Michael and his wife Carol are married, on June 14, in Bovernier, Switzerland, his father’s birthplace. Also in 1989, he received  a Private Pilot License and several years later, an instrument rating. In April, 1991 their son James is born. Michael began planting a small vineyard his property close to the Pinnacles National monument in 1981. Planting continued slowly over the next 15 years. He left Chalone Vineyard to found Michaud Vineyard in 1998.His other interests include reading, flying, backpacking, cooking and travel.

Michael, a firm believer in the rewards of growing wine in a unique viticultural environment, has certainly found his niche 1600 feet above the Salinas Valley.
