Wine from California can often fall into two categories, both of which can be attractive, and both of which can stray too far in their separate directions. Overripe, opulent, and prone to spilling over the side of their close-fitting jeans, or sharp, angular, sparse, and often severely underweight. Both styles have their following, and both have their sworn enemies. Eric Kent, I’m happy to report, pays neither club any membership dues. His program embraces a sense of place, which are cooler vineyard sites, primarily located in western Sonoma County.

One last note of intrigue; I would never normally recommend judging a book by it’s cover, but not here. The labels are carefully curated by co-owner Colleen Teitgen-Humphrey, winemaker Kent Humphrey’s wife and partner, and they take the term label art to a whole new level.

Eric Kent wines are limited, but they are here now, so Carpe diem as they say.
